SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio— An eclectic range of authors, from paranormal romance writers to Cleveland history archivists, converged on Loganberry Books for the seventh annual Author Alley.
Author Alley is a yearly book fair held at Loganberry Books during the annual Shaker Heights Larchmere Festival that both promotes local authors and gives local readers a chance to meet and talk with the writers behind the books.
"We have fifty local authors from all over northeast Ohio," explains Loganberry Books employee Susan Petrone, "some are already big names, some have just written their very first books, and some are self-published."
The event draws in hundreds of people and is a popular stop during Larchmere festival for book buys and book signings.
Owner of Loganberry Books, Harriet R. Logan, said she started the event as a way to promote local authors who weren't necessarily getting the publicity they needed.
"I had so many requests for author signings, particularly from new authors who needed grouping for better impact," said Logan.
Among the writers at the event was Brad Ricca, a University Heights local and recent Cleveland Arts Prize winner. Ricca was there to promote his book Super Boys, which explores the lives of the two Cleveland creators of Superman.
Joel Ayala Ayapana is a local author who has written a memoir of the past five years called The Book of Positive Light: Remembrance of the Heart. “It’s about whatever you put out there you get back in abundance,” said Ayapana.
Jonathan Knight, a local sports writer from Columbus who has written eight books on Cleveland sports, was also at the event to promote his most recent book Encyclopedia of the Browns.
It was Knight's first time at Author Alley and he noted that he particularly liked it because it was a community event that bypassed the often too-corporate nature of book marketing.
"It's nice to see that an independent book store like this can not only survive and thrive," explained Knight, "but can then also have an event like this to promote local authors."
The event, according to Logan, took over three months to plan.
